Cannonball 8000 – Off we go…

For the next few days I am away on the Cannonball 8000, from London to Budapest.

You can see our progress on our Team 30 Cannonball website… http://www.team30.com.

So until I get back I will be blogging there, so pay us a visit and see how we are progressing.

London – the City that never sleeps – yeh right!

Last Wednesday I was in London with Rob and Gem on a Pareto Law training course. In the evening I went out in Fulham for a drink or two. Apparently ‘Life Begins at Fulham Broadway‘, its a lie I tell you!!

We started out in Zinc, that abruptly shut at 11pm, wondering around revealed every other bar was shut, eventually we found Chateau 6.

Chateau 6 is a really nice chilled out bar, we got a bottle of wine in, and then at midnight all the lights came on and the bouncers wanted us out!

All that remained open was a dicey pub/club thingy called Fiesta Havana, which taxed us £3 each to get in and was just rubbish and only open until 2am anyway!

Dejected I did the right thing and thought lets have a kebab, could I get a Kebab?! Nope all 5million kebab houses and take aways on North End road were shut, I mean what is that all about.

Lets take this in contrast with last night, when we were out in sunny Coventry, spoilt for choice with many bars and clubs open until the early hours of the morning, and as for takeaways, do they ever shut in Coventry?!

So to sum up, in my opinion Coventry is better for late night drinking than London, unless of course you want to go to the West End and get ripped off!!

Converting people to World of Warcraft… one co-worker at a time…

For the last year or so Steve C and I were the only WoW players at bit10, however we have seen a recent flurry of newcomers…

Through no particular effort by Steve and myself, Rob fell first, he in turn converted Craig and now Steph is going to give it a try!

In addition Rob has got 2 of his housemates playing it.

WoW is undoutably an awesome game, however with 6 million players worldwide and rising rapidly, but its ‘crack’ like ‘play for 5 minutes and you are hooked’ qualities are a little worrying!!

(The) Varsity

There has been some extensive debate on the Warwick blogs, here, about whether The Varsity pub, that nestles nicely on Kirby corner outside the university, is in fact called ‘Varsity’ or ‘The Varsity’.

For my 10p worth I think its ‘The Varsity’, and I can say so with some certainty, because once upon a time, shortly after I graduated from Warwick (30th Auguest 1999), a friend (Jay McGuinness) and I embarked on a 1 day epic adventure doing a tour of the majority of ’The Varsitys’ in the country (at the time). So here you go (apologies for the poor image quality)…

Lincoln…

The Varsity - Lincoln

Leicester…

The Varsity - Leicester

Wolverhampton…

The Varsity - Wolverhampton

Birmingham…

The Varsity - Birmingham

Coventry (City Centre)

The Varsity - Coventry

Coventry (University of Warwick)…

The Varsity - University of Warwick

So there you go definetely ‘The Varsity’, in fact the Unversity of Warwick arm was ‘The New Varsity’!

Wine…

If you like your wine (and who doesn’t), I would strongly recommend you take the time to visit Matt and Mark at Vinology. I buy all my wine there and they really know their stuff. Highly recommended.

You can find them over in Stratford, on Henley Street opposite Shakespeares Birthplace.

Also as a bonus if you mention my blog they will give you a discount!!

What is the Russian for swede (the vegetable)?

Believe it or not this evening I found myself asking this very question… and its suprisingly difficult to answer.

You see my girlfriend is from Lithuania which means she is fluent in Russian and Lithuanian, and also speaks very good English, however just occasionally we find a word that stumps her.

Today in the supermarket, swede got her, no dictionary listing for it… very bizarre.

Turns out that I had failed to realise the Turnip/Swede link (from my perspective a Swede is a winter root vegetable and Turnip sole purpose is for Blackadder sketches). In fact the Swede is called a Swede because its the swedish version of the Turnip, in fact a Turnip is a smaller whitey fleshed version of what we brits called a Swede.

So the answer to the question, for all of you who are still reading, is ‘Repa’ which is the Russian for Turnip.

There you go, you can all sleep better tonight. :)

Cannonball – The Car

A few people have asked me for more details about the car we are doing the Cannonball 8000 in, so here it is:

2005 Mitsubishi Evo 9 GT (Homologation Model)

The GT is special as it has no driver safety / performance aids like AYC (Active Yaw Control) as it was designed to be the base car for a Rally Car.  The GT is not sold by UK dealers so Ben specially imported it from Japan.

Since import the following performance mods have been performed:

  • Upgraded turbo by Essex Turbo (Aluminium motorsport spec compressor, full dual ball bearing conversion)
  • Upgraded intercooler from APS
  • Upgraded cold air inlet from APS
  • Upgraded 3” stainless exhaust with de-cat from APS
  • Full AP brake conversion, Front 6-pot AD callipers with 362mm vented & grooved floating rotors, Back 4-pot AD callipers on std disks
  • G-Reddy Profec BII Boost Controller
  • Custom engine ECU reflash with modified ignition, fuel and MIVEC maps
  • Lightweight Compomotive GPN spec 18” aluminium alloy wheels

Since import the following cosmetic mods have been performed:

  • Ralliart Carbon Fibre front air splitter

This results in:

  • 420bhp – 430lb/ft torque
  • 0-60 – 4secs
  • 0-100 – 9secs

The top speed however is 161mph due to low ratio gearbox…. It would do 185mph with different gear ratios! (This is why in the Cannonball 8000 we aren’t even going to try racing!)

Cannonball 8000 – I am doing it! Woohoo!

After much deliberation, I have decided that I am going to do the Cannonball 8000.

What is it?!

For those of you who don’t know what it is check out the website here.

Essentially we will be driving from London -> Brussels -> Prague -> Budapest in just 72 hours…

There are going to be 240 drivers (120 cars), mostly petrolheads but the odd celebrity also.

In the evenings we will enjoy dinner and maybe the odd beer (however we know we need to get to bed early – so we can be nice and rested for a hard days drive!). :)

Who am I doing this with?!

With one of my very best friends Ben Scammell, possibly better known to you as the man behind Pipeline Card. We have for a long discussed doing a special event to celebrate us leaving our 20s behind and hitting 30 (he is 29 and I am now 30).

We looked at doing the Bull Run, however the costs were just eye watering.

What are we doing it in?

A monstrous Mitsubishi Evo 9, this thing is heavily modified and its an animal.

Heres some pictures…

Bens Evo 3Bens Evo 2Bens Evo 1

Why are we doing it?

Its simply once in a lifetime opportunity, and a real box ticking exercise!

Additionally we are going to get some good PR for bit10 and our other sponsors.

I am sure I will followup with more posts as we know more. We are probably going to be doing some live on the road blogging, streaming, etc. Watch this space!
